Preface

This is an English translation of High School Chemistry (Advanced Track), Volume III (高中化学(甲种本)第三册), originally published by the People’s Education Press (人民教育出版社).

This textbook was compiled by the Chemistry Division of the People’s Education Press, based on the Six-Year Key Middle School Senior High Chemistry Textbook (Trial Edition), Volume III. It was revised in accordance with the Senior High School Chemistry Teaching Syllabus (Draft) issued by the Ministry of Education in November 1983, which specifies the higher-level requirements. The Ministry’s directive states that the first cohort of key middle schools may teach according to the higher-level syllabus, while other three-year senior high schools may decide based on their own circumstances. This book is therefore intended for elective use by second-year senior high school students.

Contributors to this volume include Xu Guopei (许国培), Cheng Mingrong (程名荣), Leng Yanping (冷燕平), and others. He Shaohua (何少华) of the Chemistry Department at Beijing Normal University also participated in the compilation and revision. The responsible editor was Cheng Mingrong; the reviewers were Wu Yongxing (武永兴) and Liang Yinghao (梁英豪).

How to Use This Book

This book is intended for second-year senior high school students. The content covers:

  • Chapter 1: Transition Elements — Overview of transition elements, coordination compounds, iron and its compounds, iron and steel making, copper, and titanium.
  • Chapter 2: Hydrocarbons — Organic compounds, methane, alkanes, ethylene, alkenes, acetylene, alkynes, benzene, aromatic hydrocarbons, petroleum, and coal.
  • Chapter 3: Hydrocarbon Derivatives — Haloalkanes, alcohols, phenols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, fats and oils, nitro compounds, and amines.
  • Chapter 4: Sugars and Proteins — Monosaccharides, disaccharides, polysaccharides, amino acids, and proteins.
  • Chapter 5: Synthetic Macromolecules — Overview of macromolecular compounds, addition and condensation polymerization, plastics, synthetic fibers, and rubber.

The book also includes:

  • Appendix: Laboratory Experiments — Thirteen experiments and one optional experiment covering transition metal chemistry, organic synthesis, and polymer preparation.
  • Appendix I: Soil — Soil composition, colloids, acidity/alkalinity, redox reactions, and nutrient cycling.
  • Appendix II: Reference Tables — Solubility table of common acids, bases, and salts.

About This Translation

This English translation was produced by Dr. Chen with the assistance of Claude Code, Anthropic’s AI coding assistant. The translation aims to faithfully convey the content and pedagogical approach of the original 1983 Chinese edition while making it accessible to English-speaking readers.
