Preface

This is an English translation of High School Chemistry (Advanced Track), Volume II (高中化学(甲种本)第二册), originally published by the People’s Education Press (人民教育出版社).

This textbook was compiled by the Chemistry Division of the People’s Education Press, based on the Six-Year Key Middle School Senior High Chemistry Textbook (Trial Edition), Volume II. It was revised in accordance with the Senior High School Chemistry Teaching Syllabus (Draft) issued by the Ministry of Education in November 1983, which specifies the higher-level requirements. The Ministry’s directive states that the first cohort of key middle schools may teach according to the higher-level syllabus, while other three-year senior high schools may decide based on their own circumstances. This book is therefore intended for elective use by second-year senior high school students.

Contributors to this volume include Cheng Mingrong (程名荣), Zhang Songpei (张颂培), Li Wending (李文鼎), and others. He Shaohua (何少华) of the Chemistry Department at Beijing Normal University also participated in the compilation and revision. The responsible editor was Cheng Mingrong; the reviewers were Wu Yongxing (武永兴) and Liang Yinghao (梁英豪).

How to Use This Book

This book is intended for second-year senior high school students. The content covers:

  • Chapter 1: Chemical Bonds and Molecular Structure — Ionic bonds, covalent bonds, nonpolar and polar molecules, intermolecular forces, and hydrogen bonding.
  • Chapter 2: The Nitrogen Family — Nitrogen family elements, nitrogen gas, ammonia and ammonium salts, industrial production of nitric acid, nitric acid and nitrates, balancing redox equations, and phosphorus, phosphoric acid, and phosphates.
  • Chapter 3: Reaction Rate and Chemical Equilibrium — Chemical reaction rate, chemical equilibrium, factors affecting equilibrium, and the ammonia synthesis industry.
  • Chapter 4: Silicon and Colloids — Carbon family elements, silicon and its compounds, the silicate industry, and colloids.
  • Chapter 5: Electrolyte Solutions — Strong and weak electrolytes, ionization degree and ionization constant, water ionization and pH, salt hydrolysis, equivalent concentration, neutralization reactions, primary cells and metal corrosion, electrolysis and electroplating.
  • Chapter 6: Magnesium and Aluminum — Metallic bonding, properties of magnesium and aluminum, important compounds and aluminum smelting, and hard water softening.

The book also includes:

  • Appendix A: Laboratory Experiments — Thirteen experiments covering ammonia preparation, nitric acid properties, reaction rate and equilibrium, colloid properties, electrolyte solutions, neutralization titration, calorimetry, electrochemistry, aluminum chemistry, and molecular mass determination.
  • Appendix B: Reference Tables — Solubility table of common acids, bases, and salts.

About This Translation

This English translation was produced by Dr. Chen with the assistance of Claude Code, Anthropic’s AI coding assistant. The translation aims to faithfully convey the content and pedagogical approach of the original 1983 Chinese edition while making it accessible to English-speaking readers.
